SYNOPSIS
DENNIS AVERY (35) is living the dream: he's crushing it as creative director at his Washington, D.C. boutique branding agency and he's just gotten engaged to BECKA (25), a sexy, ambitious rising star in event planning and celebrity social-media. They're everybody's idea of a dream couple––especially their own.
That is until Dennis's mother, WYNONA (65), a rich, stunning, southern belle with four ex- husbands packed into her emotional baggage, decides to take a hand in her son’s future. Intentionally left off the guest list by Dennis, Wynona crashes the engagement party and upsets their perfect world with a bizarre gift: The Altree House, a dilapidated, historic home in Waterford, Virginia, 65 miles away.
The house is worth $1.2 million as is––Dennis can sell it and keep the money––but there's a catch when NIKKI WOODSON (33), the uncompromising African-American director of the Waterford Historical Society, tells Dennis he has to live in the historic home until it sells.
Living in the rural village of Waterford among families who have known one another for generations is a foreign experience for Dennis, who grew up in a swank hotel suite with Wynona: no father, no family, no relations, his only meaningful relationship with the hotel Bell Captain, his babysitter.
Meanwhile, Dennis is caught between two worlds: Becka's a clutching narcissist who needs big city lights and attention at all times. While in Waterford, Nikki’s passionate and principled preservationist mission collides with Dennis's slick, urbane antipathy for all things not modern and trending.
A troubled brand campaign that may doom the ad agency keeps stress levels high at work. And Wynona continues to stir the pot because that's just how she rolls.
Still, life in Waterford grows on Dennis. Particularly after he reads the diary of SHARON ALTREE, the former owner of the Altree House, whose husband, Jesse, was sent on a dangerous mission in WWII and never returned. Sharon writes of her enduring love for Jesse and her diary becomes Dennis’s inspiration in more ways than one.
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS is the story of Dennis's journey from the online world of Instagram and Twitter to the traditional world of people whose values he never knew existed.
